چکیده
Abstract Orthoptera have some of the largest genomes all insects. At same time, architecture their remains poorly understood. Comparative cytological data across a wide range taxa, even for basic parameters such as chromosome number, may provide important insights into evolution these and help answer question why species attained large genome sizes. We collected compiled more than 1,000 records numbers 339 genera (13.8% 2,452 known genera) 769 (6.2% 12,250 species) Caelifera, suborder that includes those taxa with short antennae. Within family Acrididae, most come from subfamilies Oedipodinae ( N = 325), Melanoplinae 192) Gomphocerinae 254). Out 621 investigated 459 (73.9%) shared number 2n♂ 23. Chromosome 17 (12.2%) 21 (9.9%) were less common. The remaining 4.0% exhibited different between 8 (6 + XY) 27. Plotted on phylogenetic tree, our results confirm numbers, especially in grasshopper are highly conserved count 23 (22 X0), sometimes reduced to, e.g., (16 X0) slant-faced subfamily Gomphocerinae. Species divergent occur many groups we studied, but not systematic trait evolved multiple times independently. Our study supports view much stable Caelifera compared to Ensifera, second long antennae bush crickets crickets. significantly extend knowledge diversity this character Caelifera.

Through laboratory choice tests involving 19 plant species, we assessed the host selection behavior of six grasshopper species: Stenacris vitreipennis (Marschall) (glassywinged toothpick grasshopper), Leptysma marginicollis (Serville) (cattail toothpick grasshopper), Gymnoscirtetes pusillus Scudder (little wingless grasshopper), Paroxya clavuliger (Serville) (olivegreen swamp grasshopper), Paro...
متن کاملEcological drivers of body size evolution and sexual size dimorphism in short-horned grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae).
Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is widespread and variable in nature. Although female-biased SSD predominates among insects, the proximate ecological and evolutionary factors promoting this phenomenon remain largely unstudied. Here, we employ modern phylogenetic comparative methods on eight subfamilies of Iberian grasshoppers (85 species) to examine the validity of different models of evolution of...
